Recently, according to a Travel + Leisure reader survey, Santa Fe ranked as the second-best city in the U.S. and #14 in the magazine’s Top 15 Cities in the World. Maybe second to last place doesn’t sound like the greatest number, but hey- the only other U.S. city on the list was Charleston. Take that, Boulder!
Just kidding, Boulder, you’re pretty cool actually.
Pretty much everyone has heard of #HowtoSantaFe, right? Folks around here seem to be into our city as a verb, and we’re ok with that. So we thought we should list our very favorite #HowtoSantaFe day!
9:00 AM Now we’re thinking maybe a short, scenic hike? That’s totally Santa Fe, right? But first, let’s stop by the magical place that is REI for supplies. Or, as this writer’s partner likes to call it, Really Excited Iguanas. (A couple of years ago, we couldn’t remember what REI stood for, so we just starting making up acronyms and this one stuck.) Ok, now that we’ve got our dad lookin’ sun hat and kinda overpriced but totally worth it compression socks, we’re ready to hike!
10:00 AM Just kidding. We got so distracted by all the high tech outdoor gear we need a caffeine refuel. We’re heading to Sky Coffee across the street. They make a mean pour-over and one heck of a tea selection for you non-coffee lovers out there.
11:00 AM We’re finally gonna head to the Atalaya Trail! It’s scenic, not too hard/long a walk and you can turn back pretty easily at any time that you realize nature isn’t really your thing after all. Actually, it never has. Hmm. When is that bowling alley gonna be ready…
1:30 PM Well, we stuck it out for our outdoorsy friend/partner/spouse/mom/dad/dog and made it to the top and back! And we’re starving. Since we were super active today, we’re now in a kinda healthy mood. Lunch at Counter Culture seems like a good pick. Their sandwich/soup/salad combo is always pretty dope. Plus, they’ve got a pretty good stash of papers so we can do the crossword and catch up on the reporter.
3:00 PM Anyone else feeling sleepy? We just hiked like, 7 miles, it’s time for a nap. We’re gonna stop by op.cit. books for some reading materials and then we’re gonna set up a blanket to doze at Fort Marcy.
5:30 PM This has been a long day. We’re almost ready for more, but first, we gotta shower. Because, ya know, hiking and park smells. Brb.
7:00 PM Dinner time! It’s our third time eating out today and we’re totally stoked we didn’t have to cook, ya’ll. You wouldn’t peg Santa Fe for South Indian food, but oh boy do we got it! We’re heading to Paper Dosa for a dosa as large as your torso and some spicy pakora.
We’re not even gonna pretend that we have the energy to do more after this, but if you’re still going strong, we recommend Cowgirl or Ghost for some pretty sweet live music. Consequently, we’re heading home to our couch and cats.
Overall, It’s been a pretty great day in the Fe, and we think we did it it to ’em.
